Shore Based Courses

RYA Day Skipper Theory Course

Course:

RYA Day Skipper Theory Course (also known as Day Skipper shorebased Course)

Duration:
5 days (in a week) or 6 days over three weekends or about 22 weeks of 3 hour evening sessions.

Scheduled courses are held at Southampton , Hampshire and in the Solent area.

Likely participants:
The course is equally applicable for sail or power boaters and suits those keen to spend a good amount of time developing their theoretical knowledge away from the water, either before or after attending a Day Skipper Practical Course. It also acts as an excellent follow on to Powerboat Level 2 or as an essential ahead of the Advanced Powerboat Course .

This is an excellent course to take as it goes into far more detail about aspects of safety, boat types, weather, navigation, charts, Collision Regulations, etc, than can be achieved over the duration of a short practical course. Entirely classroom based, this course lasts 5 days or three weekends depending on the course you want to attend.

This is an ideal course for a Powerboat Level 2 or Motor Cruising Helmsman 'graduates' to take to build on their knowledge or as a prerequisite for the Advanced Powerboat Course. Equally if you intend taking Day Skipper Practical Course then taking this course will allow more of your practical course to be dedicated to the practical aspects of the course

Prior experience:
None necessary

Course Venue:
Southampton or High Wycombe

RYA VHF SRC Marine Radio Operators Course

Course:

RYA Short Range Certificate - VHF / DSC Operators Course including GMDSS Training

Duration:
1 day (1/2 day upgrade course if converting from 'old' VHF Restricted Certificate of Competence qualification)

Likely participants:
This course is essential for everyone! A VHF is an essential item of safety kit and thus taking a course to ensure that you know how to use it is key.

It is somewhat ironic that to helm a high powered powerboat or yacht you don't need any form of licence or qualification, yet to use its VHF radio you need a licence for the set and to sit an exam to gain your Radio Operators Certificate / Licence .

This is a one day course and simply tends to be known as the VHF Course . The course/exam leads to the new Short Range Certificate ( SRC ) and covers the new Global Maritime Distress and Safety System ( GMDSS ). This subject is too large to go into the level of detail we would like to on this site so please contact us for further information.

Unlike most other RYA schools we do not use unrealistic computer simulators, but have invested in a full set of DSC radios (with the transmitters removed). This means you are learning on real and state of the art equipment. Our classroom is fitted with ICOM DSC simulator sets.

Course Venue:
Southampton or High Wycombe
